On May 19th the MFA Com Des group of world travelers shared a happy reunion in Newark New Jersey. Despite delays and hiccups along the journey, the group consisting of Asha, Analee, Cameo, Andrea, and I (Jordan) arrived right on time in Berlin at 8:30am on May 20th. Tired, yet excited, we hailed a cab to meet with Claudia, who was readily awaiting us at our hotel.
Berlin is on a 7 hour time difference from Texas, so we were faced with the challenge of staying awake for the whole day to adjust to the new time. Luckily, we arrived the day before the conference starts, so there was time to get acclimated. Since we had a free day to explore, and daylight to burn, we decided to go the tourist route to see the city and get the curiosity out of our system. We ventured about town visiting various shops and trying local fare. With Claudia’s help we were able to do some shopping, learn about the city, and take care of loose ends.
It seems the train workers union is on strike and it will affect our travel options, as some systems are shut down while other residents and visitors of the city were seeking alternative options to get around. It was an arduous process that consumed most of the day, but we were able to find a way to make our travel plans over the next week work out.
After a long and exhausting, yet exciting two days, the group was ready to unwind and grab dinner with the German summer favorite, white asparagus, and a few German beers of course! With the mild weather and soothing atmosphere of the city, we were able to close the day on a positive note and we are ready to get some sleep in preparation for the upcoming Typo Berlin conference this weekend!
Note: We have had limited access to internet/communications services upon our arrival. Now that we are settled, we hope to have the kinks work out so we can continue to share our experience with everyone.
